UPS driver recovering after pit bull mauling

DENVER – A UPS driver is recovering after he was viciously attacked by two pit bulls at a southeast Denver condominium complex.

Ed Kline was delivering a package Thursday at Woodstream Falls Condominiums on East Iliff Avenue when he was attacked.

Kline’s wife said he has more than 80 stitches in his arms and one of the dogs bit through his shoe and broke his foot.

The pit bull owner, who wasn’t home at the time, said her 4-year-old daughter opened the door and the dogs got out. A babysitter was supposed to be supervising.

“I’m very sorry for the gentleman,” owner Irina Malaya told 7NEWS, crying by phone. “I don’t know what to say because I’m freaking out.”

Malaya claimed she didn’t know pit bulls are banned in Denver, and said the owner of the condo she’s renting never told her. She said the dogs have not hurt anyone in the past.

A neighbor told 7NEWS that Malaya said she knew pit bulls were outlawed in Denver.

Malaya was cited for owning pit bulls as well as the dogs’ biting. She agreed to have both dogs euthanized. Animal Control said there is no record of prior attacks.

Neighbors who saw what happened to Kline said it was horrifying.

“The guy lost a lot of blood,” said neighbor Velma, who didn’t want to give her last name.

She showed 7NEWS the corridor where Kline was cornered by the dogs, one of them relentless.

“This was a pretty horrific looking thing here,” Velma said of the surrounding walls. “The dog was kind of in kill mode really, and it ran back and attacked him again.”

What likely saved Kline’s life was a man and woman who were able to pull him inside his porch, away from the dogs.

The couple weren’t home when we stopped by on Tuesday, and Kline’s wife said she has been unable to reach them to thank them personally.

Kline, a UPS driver of 38 years, is well-known at the complex, and neighbors are now circulating a “get well” card for him.
